Acrylic on paper
I chose to do this copy as I thought it portrayed a lot of hidden emotions.  At first glance, you see a blur of colours, with the use of the impasto technique and then the perfected eye and mouth.  This symbolises, to me, the idea of creating identity for yourself for others to see and the idea of hiding a part of yourself away from society. I also found the colours Lee chose very appealing and liked the way the colours contrast against each other, especially between the pink background and deep brown skin.

Acrylic and graphite pencil
This piece was inspired by Elly Smallwood through the technique of using both paint and graphire in my work.  We can suggest from this kind of method, where we have the right side of the face in acrylic paint and the left in graphite with some of the paint going over to the left also as its dragged out.  I think that this kind of work can help us perceive the kind of emotions that the subject is feeling, as we see the right side is very chaotic and expressive, however the left we see more structure and also the scientific way to view the face.  We see from the technical words that describe three parts of the subjects face.  The way we view someones face is different and I think my artwork shows this as we see the more artistic side and also the scientific side.

I decided to copy this work as I liked the use of colour and also the way Smallwood had incoporated hands onto it.  This work I believe shows a lot of emotions of being trapped and society not allowing us to be free in ourselves as the hands are grabbing onto the head.  The use of colour on the face, reds and yellows shows the subjects real self, and the hands are trapping this.  The facial expression I thought was very effective as it seems indifferent and this shows us the way society makes us subdued to its grip.

Final project
For my final project I chose to use my subject facing downwards with her eyes closed as I thought this was most effective with the addition of the hands over the face.  I wanted to create an image that conveyed a sense of struggle and being restrained.  I think that this work does convey that through the use of the hands grabbing the face.  I chose to use pinks and reds for the face and grey as the background to make the face stand out a lot and  also it portrays the subjects emotions of anger as well.  We see her face seems restful but from the dragging of paint across her mouth, and the deep pink colour, portrays anger.

Watercolour and acrylic on paper
I chose to do this artists copy as I wanted to try to do something new and I hadn't looked much at buildings and the subject of nightime.  The colours in this piece is what gives it so much life, and we can almost make out that Tokyo was 'glowing' .  The use of all the different colours; reds, oranges, blues yellows and pinks really gives the painting a feeling of aliveness and luminosity.  I used white acrylic to make the street lights more bright and also used red and white acrylic paint for the lettering on the side of the buildings.

Acrylic paint
I chose to do this copy of Smallwoods work as I found the way she used colour within it very interesting.  I really like the effect of depth within this work and was inspired by the soft use of line she uses as well.  I think the way she made the yes, nose and mouth very deep in colour was very effective and put a lot of focus on the subject. I used this artist copy as inspiration for my final piece also.

Acrylic paint on paper
I chose to do this artists copy as I was attracted to the colours she uses, which I think is what puts so much emotion into this work.  On the right side of the face we see red colours placed on the subjects face in a careless way and on the left we see blue ones also put on in a chaotic way.  From this we can perceive anger, on the right side, and calmness/sadness on the left.  This painting intrigued me as you can almost see time through it as well, through the emotions we can sense the movement of going from one emotion to the other.

Acrylic paint and graphite
I was inspired by the work of Elly Smallwood, particularly for the end of my project.  I chose from my own photographs a photo of my subject looking down to the right with her eyes shut.  The effect of the smudged lip where I have dragged the paint to the left.  I think this gives the subject a sense of chaos and expression.

Acrlic paint and impasto gel
I liked this work as I felt it held a lot of emotions and more personality than some of his other works.  I enjoyed using this technique as I feel you can really focus on the materials used and the brush strokes and vividness of the colours instead of the specific subject itself.

Acrylic Paint
For my initial ideas I decided I wanted to start experimenting with paint and texture more and so did this with this impasto painting of Frank Ocean.  I realised that this style seemed to suit me more and I really like how you can build up the layers and it add more effect to the painting.  I also like how using the impasto style you can make mistakes yet still turn out a really effective piece of work.

white chalk and charcoal on black paper
I wanted to experiment with inverted colours and so chose this black and white photograph to do this from.  I think the effect of the photograph is really intense and there's a lot of focus on the aspects of beauty.

watercolour and fineliner
I wanted to look more at buildings and messier styles within this and so chose this photograph of the Hawa Mahal.  I really liked how this turned out and as an initial idea of my year 12 project it pushed me into going ontowards styles that are riskier and less structured than I had ever done before.

Acrylic paint and ink
For experimentation for my final piece I decided on one of my own photographs and wanted to experiment more with brighter colours.  I had been using a lot of reds and pinks and in this I chose instead to use pinks, yellows and oranges.  I really like how the subject is facing upwards more with her eyes open and as I painted the eyes a blue colour they really stand out.  I chose to use ink to sketch the hair and add some detail and this did work well as I could be more precise.
